A Little Boy by Frederick Buck
Portrait of a little boy by Frederick Buck. The water color on ivory, 1/2 length portrait depicts a lovely little boy with long dark curls and large brown eyes, wearing a dark blue suit with wide lapels and brass buttons, and a white shirt with large frilled collar beneath. Sky background. Gold frame with hanging loop and engraved rim. Hair back with the central initial cartouche, "JHD". Oval, 5 cms. diameter (2 inches). Very good condition. This is quite an early example of the work of Buck, dating from the 18th Century, and unusual as Buck is primarily know for painting Red Coat soldiers. Frederick Buck was born in Cork, Ireland in 1771. Examples of his work are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and many private collections around the world.
