| Portrait miniature of John Mackie, Junior, (c. 1795), painted by Abraham Daniel. The oval portrait depicts John Mackie (1787-1847) as a young boy. He is wearing a grey skeleton suit with a white collar. His long brown hair is in curls over his shoulders. Gold frame, the reverse glazed to reveal plaited brown hair. 6 cms. high (2 1/2 inches). Mint Condition; this is a former museum piece. Provenance: By family descent Exhibited: Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 2000-2003. This miniature is characteristic of the work of Abraham Daniel in a number of ways. The hair is painted softly, in large masses, and the eyes are large and wide open with strongly emphasized eyelids. In addition, the features are shaded in order to emphasize the modeling of the nose. The sitter, John Mackie, Junior was the son of the physician, John Mackie (1748-1831), and his wife (nee Sevegne), who was sketched by Ingres in Rome in 1816 (this portrait is now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London). The Mackie family resided in Southampton where they were acquainted with the family of Jane Austen. John Mackie, Junior went on to become a Doctor of Divinity and a Clergyman. He was also a fellow of the Royal Society and of Christchurch College, Oxford. Abraham Daniel (d. 1806) was the son of Nochaniah Daniel, also a miniaturist. Daniel practiced chiefly at Plymouth, but also on occasion at Bath. Miniatures by Daniel may be seen in many public collections including the Victorian & Albert Museum, London, the Holburne Museum, Bath, and the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, as well as in many private collections. Abraham Daniel died in 1806. | ||||||||
