| Jean Andre Rouquet (1701 – 1758) Portrait of a gentleman, c. 1730. The portrait depicts the powdered and bewigged gentleman, wearing a yellow embroidered waist coat, and white stock, under a brown coat. Portrait set in 9K gold case, surrounded by foil-backed paste stones. Glazed reverse set with cream fabric. Oval, 6 cms. X 4 cms. (2 ¼ inches x 1 7/8 inches). Excellent condition. Jean Andre Rouquet was born in Geneva in 1701, the son of French Protestants who fled to Switzerland. He probably arrived in London, c. 1723. Rouquet was heavily influenced by the work of Zincke; he is said to have been friends with Hogarth, Garrick, and other luminaries of the day. He exhibited at the Paris Salon, 1753-1757, and joined the Academie Royale in 1753. He painted the portraits of Louis XV and Mme. de Pompadour, and was given a studio in the Louvre. | ||||||||
