The Henley Family by Thomas James Mulvaney
Thomas James Mulvaney (RHA, 1779 -1845). Five members of the Henley family and a portrait of Rev. Thomas Corcoran (c.1820). Watercolour on card. All in matching carved giltwood frames with plaques to the obverse, identifying the artist and sitter. The sitters include: Elizabeth Henley 1795-1875 (identified in pencil as “E Henley” to reverse) Frances Henley, wife of John Sampson (1800-1872) Anna Margaret Henley (1805-1872) (identified in pencil to reverse) John Henley (1809-1853) Maria Henley (no dates given), The Reverend Thomas Corcoran (identified in pencil to reverse) Oval, 14 cms. X 11 cms. ( 5 1/2 inches X 4 ˝ inches). Several of the portraits with small worm holes. Thomas James Mulvaney was born in Dublin, Ireland, 1779. He studied under F. R. West in the Dublin Society Schools, where he showed promise as a figure draughtsman. Mulvaney painted miniatures at the outset of his career, exhibiting eight in Dublin in 1802. Subsequently, he devoted himself to both figure composition and landscapes. Mulvaney exhibited in Dublin 1810-1844 and was an original member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He was appointed the first Keeper to the RHA, retaining this office until his death. Mulvaney died of paralysis after 3 days illness at Dirker Lodge, Cross Avenue, Booterstown on 27 February 1845, and was buried at Mount Jerome.
